『Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art』において、スコット・マクラウドは「単一の瞬間（single moment）」という考え方を用い、鑑賞者が一枚の静止画像を「時間の中で凍結された一瞬」として認識するように条件づけられていることを説明している。写真や写実的な美術の影響により、読者はたとえ一つの画像の中に時間的な幅をもつ複数の動作が含まれていたとしても、連続した一枚の画像は一つの瞬間に対応すると無意識に仮定してしまう傾向がある。

この概念は漫画理論において重要である。なぜならそれは、画像の空間的性質（＝一つのコマ） と読者によって構築される時間的体験とのあいだに存在する緊張関係を明らかにするからである。

マクラウドは、漫画家が一つのコマの中に複数の時間的出来事を詰め込むことで、この前提を意図的に揺さぶったり拡張したりできると論じている。そうすることで、読者の時間知覚は引き伸ばされ、時間の感じ方そのものが操作されるのである。

In Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud uses the idea of a single moment to describe the way viewers are conditioned to perceive a single static image as representing one frozen instant in time.

Because of the influence of photography and representational art, readers tend to assume that one continuous image corresponds to one moment, even when the image actually contains multiple actions occurring over a span of time.

This concept is important in comics theory because it reveals a tension between: the spatial nature of the image (a single panel), and the temporal experience constructed by the reader.

McCloud argues that comics artists can deliberately challenge or expand this assumption by packing multiple temporal events into a single panel, thus stretching the reader’s perception of time.
